The new handgun range is ready and open for use. Tables and target stands are set up. You must remain at the firing line while shooting. However you are free to place target stands anywhere between you and the back berm. Additional stands are available in the clubhouse.
Be aware, the handgun range is open for use at the same time as trap shoots are scheduled. And that both the handgun and rifle range can be in use simultaneously.
Be sure to read the rules concerning the handgun range. Also when entering the range, use the path to the range. Do not park down by the trap house. You may find yourself down range of active shooters at the rifle range.
Other News: November’s meeting will be held at the American Legion Post 158. There is no December meeting. And we will be voting in new officers at the January meeting. This includes one board position as well.
The berm for the new range is complete. It looks great! However the range is not open for shooting yet. We still need to dress the berms with grass seed to control erosion. In addition, range rules are being updated. And we need tables and portable target stands.
Here’s a shout out to Carl Houston Jr. and his son Chris Houston for doing a fantastic job. These guys went above and beyond what was asked of them. Not only did they build the berm, they graded and prepped the grounds. And installed a culvert.
This coming Wednesday, the 16th, we will have our monthly meeting at the clubhouse.
Information about the progress of the new pistol range and other information, will be discussed. We will need to have a “work day” soon. The date has not been decided yet.
What we would like to have is a large turnout for this work day so we can get started with the pistol range. Trees need to cut and the brush moved out of the way to make way for the ground work.
The weather is another big factor but maybe we might get lucky and have a good stretch of decent weather. If all this comes together, we just might get this new pistol range up and running this year.
There’s more than one thing that must fall into place and extra help on work days is always a plus. Time and good weather will predict the outcome.
Conditions at the range as of Tuesday, April 25th are muddy. With the rain this week, the ground will be soaked for a while.
I also noticed a lot of brass on the ground by the 25 yrd berm. Please be sure to police yourself. Brass and lawnmowers don’t go well together.
Beginning in May, trap shooting is scheduled at Noon, for the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month. Members are $3 a round and non-members are $4. While the shoot goes on the rifle range will not be available.
With a new year upon us we will start our “to do” list for Club projects. On the agenda for this months’ meeting, is the election of Officers and positions on the Board of Directors. If you have an interest in any position, please come to the meeting and “throw your name into the hat”.
We will also discuss having another raffle, possibly a compact handgun. The Club needs to generate funds for future improvements for the range and clubhouse and this has provided funds for us in the past.
For these winter months, we will be having guest speakers. The Commissioner of IF&W, the local game warden and possibly a Senator, are hopefuls for a meeting. We hope schedules work for individuals so they can attend a meeting. If you have a suggestion for a guest speaker let us know.
Just a reminder, the yearly game supper will be next month. If you have extra game to share we would appreciate it.
We would like to encourage the membership to consider a donation or getting a membership to SAM, the Sportsman Alliance of Maine. They have done a lot of good work for gun rights, legislation and sportsman’s issues.
For all the hunters in the club this is the time of year we love to be out in the woods tacking down that sometimes-elusive quarry. Whether it’s the feathered variety or the four-legged kind, we use our marksmanship and skills to bring home the prize for the kitchen table or for the wall.
Of course, there are always the stories that go along with hunting…. like the time that you came face to face with a deer while turkey hunting…. or watching a flock of turkeys s-l-o-w-l-y pass your blind while deer hunting…. or the time when you were waiting for that buck to show up, because you didn’t get your doe permit, and all you see are does coming in all within 50 yards! And the list goes on.
For the members who want to renew their membership you can download an application from our website and mail to the address provided or attend the monthly meeting next Wednesday the 16th.
This month’s meeting will be at the American Legion on Webster Rd. in the upstairs meeting room at 7PM. This meeting will the last one for the year. There is no meeting in December and the next meeting will be January 18, 2017 at the Legion.
